When Should You Replace Your Door Locks?

A door lock is one of the most important parts of your house, and helps to ensure that you and your family remain safe. With that in mind, you always want to make sure that your locks are in good shape and functioning properly. Here are some of the signs to look for to know when you should replace your door locks:

Rust - If you notice that your lock is starting to get rusty, then you’ll want to look into getting it replaced. Rust could cause the lock to malfunction, leading the door to not open and close properly. 

Damage - Damage is common, especially on older locks. Natural wear and tear from years of use causes lock damage. If you notice any type of damage, whatever the cause, you’ll want to get your door lock replaced immediately. 

Operational Difficulty - Have you ever had a difficult time opening your door? Maybe the key keeps turning or gets jammed. Do you experience something similar when locking the door? If you’re having any of these operational difficulties, then it’s time to get your door lock replaced. This will only continue to get worse and lead to more problems. 

Old Locks - Even if your door locks are functioning properly, if you’ve had them for more than a decade, it’s not a bad idea to look into getting them replaced. Your locks get a lot of use on a daily basis, which will eventually lead to them breaking down. Get them replaced ahead of time before there’s an issue. 

Lost Keys - If you lose your keys, or if your keys happen to get stolen, you must get your door locks replaced. You never know who has your keys, if they know where you live, or if they’ll try to get into your home. It’s always better to be safe than sorry! 

New House - If you’re moving into a new house, it’s a smart idea to have all the door locks replaced. You don’t know who has access to the old keys, and as a safety measure, getting new locks is highly recommended.
